Program audio feed to the announce output is selected by setting jumper J11 on the main board to the on position. These auxiliary program inputs can only be fed directly to their associated intercom line. The only controls that affect these inputs are the PGM-level controls associated with each channel and the internal program interrupt switch that is active if the function has been activated with an option DIP switch and a talk is active on that channel. Page 30 INTERNAL OPTION JUMPERS There are several jumper options inside the chassis of the MS-704 and RM-704. CAUTION:Remove AC power from the unit before removing the top cover.

90 GHz frequency spectrum, there is no in t erference with existing wireless systems, even those located in the s ame production area. You can use FS II stand - alone or connected w it h partyline, digital matrix intercom systems or both. The Bas e s tat io n holds connections for several wi red interf aces, including par ty line s, 4- wire sources, a program audio source, and a stage announce output dev ice. W hen connected to the Bas e s tat io n, these devices communicate seamlessly w ith the wireless beltpacks. Partyline beltpacks and 4 - w ire m atrix stations and panels can k ey directly to wireless beltpack by name. You can configure FS II either from the Base station or fr om a PC Configuration Editor. Free S peak II components can be used ei ther with a Bas e st at io n or with a matrix equipped with E - Que cards in antenna or splitter mode. For more in formation, See the Eclipse HX Configuration Soft ware User Guide. 11 FreeSpeak II User Guide. Note: You can also configure the sy stem by connecting it to an Eclipse H X Mat r i x and using the EHX software. Beltpacks can roam freely between cov er age zones. FS II also includes a drop - in bat t ery charger for the beltpac k Li - Ion batteries. You can conveniently charge the bat tery b y placing the whole beltpack into the charger. FS II operates using a cell ular network of antennas located around a wor k ing environment. The antennas connect directly to the FS II Base station with CAT - 5 cable. Each antenna provides an area or cell in w hic h four t o five full - duplex beltpacks can operate. Figure 2-2 shows an example con figuration. Beltpacks can roam among and be tween cells wi thout disconnecting because each beltpack continually signals an antenna as to the s t rongest available signal. W hen the signal f rom an antenna starts to diminish due to the dis t ance from a beltpack, the bel tpack automatically “hands off” its signal to the neares t antenna, ensuring s moo th t ra ns f er.

W ith its four communication routes, the beltpack gives you the flexibility to communicate qu ick ly and s eamless ly with individua ls or gr oups, and to change communication routes as often as needed. The system operates in the unlicensed 1.90 GHz band. With its unique and innovative di gital technology, which continually searches for unused radio frequency (RF) channels, FS II avoids the noise and inter ference issues associated with traditional wireless systems usin g congested UHF and VHF bands. Hold them in place in some temporary way until their optimal position is determined. Use of other cable can result in markedly shorter distances of cable runs and ot her possibly other performance problems. 3.2.2 Pow e r s uppl ies to the c ompone nts of an FS II S y st em See figure 4- 1 a nd fig ur e 4 - 2 below for recommended powering and cable l engt hs for an FS I I system. 15 FreeSpeak II User Guide. The following figure illustrates some FreeSpeak II cov erage scenarios. Figure 3-3 Coverage a re as for FS II T A s Note: Cells can be completely ov erlapped for density (by co - locating multiple antennas). Cells can be overlapped at bounda ries (increases radio coverage). For most working systems Clear - Com u se s a r ati o of 3 - 4 users per antenna. This is due t o s ystem losses. Alternatively, use the “site survey” mode on the b elt pack (see “Doing a Site Survey t o Determine Coverage Areas” below). It is o ften best to begin with one an tenna in place, and then place additional units to enhance coverage. 17 FreeSpeak II User Guide See C hapter 5, “Programming a System from the Base station ” f or instructions. 3.3 Doing a s ite s ur vey to determi ne co verage areas You might want to test c overag e areas more extensiv el y before setting up a complete system. Testing a system in the s etting in which it will be l ocated helps to meet operational needs. Fa ctors in the local setting may a f fect the areas a sy st em can cover, so it is importan t to plan a site setup accordingly. Doing a complete site survey, as described below, helps to set up an opt imal system.

Figure 2-2 Configur ations for a s tudio and larg e -s cale b ro adca st f acilit y 12 FreeSpeak II User Guide A single FS II Bas e st at ion supports up to t wenty beltpacks and up t o ten antennas, giving a great deal o f flexibility in placing beltpacks where they a re needed most, and for providing wireless reliability. Figure 2-2 illustrates how an FS I I system can be se t up to operate in a single studi o or in a large - scale permanent broadcas t facility. Note: Each antenna is designed to handl e five beltpacks simultaneously in good conditions. Ho we ver, if interference or propagation problems occur in an a r ea, to ensure proper operation and reliability, it may be more practical to install four beltpacks for each antenna. For zones which are li kely to need coverage for five or more bel tpacks simultane ously you must install a second antenna. Sim ilarly, for good coverage f or nine or more belt packs simultaneously, a third antenna may be r equired. 13 FreeSpeak II User Guide It shou ld be made accessible. At thi s sta ge you might c hoose to register all of the beltpacks w ith t he Base station, or at least register one or two f or system setup and testing. 3.2 Placing the ante nnas and s plitte rs The next step is to be g in placing antennas and sp litters to provide the necessary coverage areas for all of the beltpacks. T he first placements of antennas and splitters will be experimental and temporary. After placing the antennas, w alk through the cov erage areas to check for gaps and then re - locate the antennas accordingly. Th e Base station supports two spli tters. If you need more than on e ant enna splitter, the second spli tter must be connected dir ect ly t o the Ba se s t ati on. S plitters cannot be connected in a dai sy chain configuration.Note: To m e et F CC em is s ion s r eq u ir em ent s, a f er rit e must be f itted on any shielded Ethernet cable plugged into either of the tw o ports labeled “transceivers.

    7) The antenna placement will need to be adjusted to get the best coverage. Figure 3-5 Mapping overl apping cov erage zon es In some environments you mi ght observe that despite having a high si g nal strength, the beltpack consistently reports a high error rate. Zone A 1 user Zone C 4 users Zone B 5 users 19 FreeSpeak II User Guide. This problem is greatest where the reflective surface is large and exists at a ran ge of distances from the antenna. To resolve this problem, consider siting the antenna where it cannot “see” the reflective sur face or installing a reflector close to the a ntenna between it and t he reflective surface. 3.3.2 Testing a ntenna handoff After t esting the coverage areas f or individual antennas, test t he handoff between the antennas. W hen yo u walk through a coverage area w it h the beltpack, the beltpack searches to f ind t he antenna w ith the best signal strength, and sw itc hes transmission to that antenna. Therefore the beltpack continually hands off transmission among an t ennas as you move through the coverage area. You can determine which antenna the beltpack is connected t o using the Configuration Editor Diagnostics Tool. To test antenna handoff, connect any additional antennas in the installation and w alk through the coverage areas to ensure t hat the coverage is continuous and co m plete, without audio breakups. Reposition antennas if necessary. 3.3.3 Getting informati on on a ctive a ntenna s tatus You can also monitor which beltpacks are connec t ed to which antennas using the B as e station SYSTEM menu and using the Configuration Editor Diagnostics Tool. W hen you select ANTNS from the SYSTEM menu, the display show s t he status of the ac tive antennas that ar e connected to the Base station, and show s the slots on each antenna tha t are occupied by beltpacks. This in f ormation may be useful during a site s urvey, or w hen troubleshooting coverage areas or antenna connections.

You can do a site survey using a beltpack that is connected to the sy s tem or one that is no t connected to the system. 3.3.1 Doing a site s urvey w ith a bel tpack 1) Place the FS II Base station i n a convenient location. Register one beltpack to the Base station. 2) Pl ace one connected antenna in the center o f the coverage area. 3) Put the beltpack into S ite S ur ve y mode using the beltpack menu. As a rule - of - thumb the best system performance w ill be obtained when the signal strength remains at 30 or above. I f the signal strength falls bel ow 30 the beltpack may start losing audio. A beltpack can t ra nsmit to an antenna at a range o f approximately 500m in good conditions. 5) Draw a map of the cov erage zone for the antenna. The coverage zone is t he area where the signal strength, as a r ule - of - t humb, is 30 or above and the Line Quality is 3-5. 6) Repeat this process for as many an tennas as necessary to cover the r equired area. Overlap coverage zones so that there is no area where the signal strength is below 30, and no area where t he error rate is above a f ew percent.

T he descriptions below will discuss connections with Cl ear - Com and compatible partyline, RTS partyline, the ability of FS II to power up to f our Clear - Com partyline beltpacks by itsel f, and the front - panel settings associated with these party line connections. Using the fr ont - panel display and r otary encoder, the user may g o into the PORTS menu, select the desired partyline channel, and create a f ive - character alphanumeric label for it. This is the label that woul d then appear on any beltpacks to w hich that partyline connection was assigned for communications. In the GROUPS m enu, the partyline connection can be assigned as a member of any o f t he groups, as desired. 4.2.

A typical display is shown bel ow: Figure 3-6 ANTNS menu The numbers 1 through 10 r epresent the maxi mum number of antennas that can be connected to t he Base station. So the above display would indicate that five antennas are connected t o the Base station in positions 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7. There are no active antennas in positions 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10. There are 4 beltpacks currently connected. Beltpa cks 2 and 4 occupy the first 2 slots of antenna 3; beltpack 1 occupies the f irst slot of antenna 6; and beltpa ck 3 occupies the f irst slot of antenna 7. The display updates every 4 seconds to reflect changes in antenna s tatus and beltpack connections. Although it can achieve this in good conditions, this may not alw a ys be possible f or a number of reasons. First, interference or propagation problems may mean t hat not all antenna slots are avai lable all the time. Second, a beltpack constantly searches f or the best antenna si gnal, and may frequently switch antennas. To m ake this transmission seamless, a beltpack maintains the connection to its current antenna until it is con fident that the new antenna is functioning well. Therefore, for a short period of time during this transition, a sin g le beltpack can occupy slots on m ore than one antenna. This mean s that for zones likely to need covera g e for five or more beltpac ks simultaneously it is recommended that a second antenna i s installed. The presence of w alls, floors, ceilings, trees, shrubbery, people, and numerous other items may affect the coverage zone. M et allic objects, safety doors, lighting equipment, and bodies o f water may possibly block transmission. These factors must be taken into consideration when planni ng the installation. 3.4 Registering belt packs Before you can use a bel t pack, you must f irst register it with the FreeSpeak II system.

The beltpacks can be registered to the Base s t ation using the Configuration Edi tor or, for larg er systems, directly to an Ecli pse matrix (Omega, Median or Delta) usin g Eclipse HX software (EHX ).See the Eclipse HX So f ware Configuration User Guide. Enable registration mode has a two minute inactive time - out. This is so that sev eral beltpacks can be registered sequentially without the user having to re - enable registration mode. It also prevents unauthorised users from r egistering beltpacks. 2) On the beltpack to be registered, hold t he menu key f or two seconds to enter MENU options. Scroll to SYSTEM CO NNECT using the rotary controllers and se lect it using key D. In menu mode t he D key on t he beltpack operates as SELEC T and the C key exits the menu level and c ancels the selection. Note: On a new sy s tem there will be no previ ous connections at this point. However, if the beltpack is currently connected to an act ive system, a co nfirmation screen will appear. Select Yes to connect t o a new sy stem or No to remain connected t o the current system. 3) Available systems, and previously registered systems, wil l be visible on the beltpack menu screen. 22 FreeSpeak II User Guide This shows that the beltpack has been previously r egistered with the system which mig ht rec ognise it. 4) Enter the four digit pairing code for the sy stem using both rotary controllers and t he menu select key (D). The de f ault code is 0000. Note: The OTA registration code is av ailable from the Base station menu. The inactiv e timer is restarted now. 7) If required, the next beltpack can now be r egistered (Step 2). Note: On the B a se s t at ion these chan ges are persistent, but should still be retriev ed f rom the unit by the Configuration Editor so they can be backed up. 23 FreeSpeak II User Guide Powe r cons umpt ion is 80 watts.

1 Clear - Com and c ompatibl e p arty line Clear - Com and Clear - Com - compatible wired partyline intercoms connect to the PL C H - A and PL CH - B connectors in a similar manner to conne ct ing beltpacks or remote stations t o the intercom line. Typically that wired intercom conn ection would have a 30 - VD C current on Pin 2, coming from a main station or an inte rcom power supply. The second connector in the pair may be used as a l oop -t hrough to go to othe r wired partyline stations or beltpacks, or to a second FS II Base station. The pinout for partyline connector is show n in Table 4-1. Pin Description 1 Ground (shield) 2 Power 3 Audio Table 4- 1 Part yline p inout 4.2.1.1 To c onnect part y line equipm ent to the Base stat ion 1) Check that the partyline LED on the f ront - panel is out, which indicates that the partyline connection is disabled from the Base s tation. 2) Connect, and if appropriate, power up, the external partyline equipment. 3) Enable the partyline by pressing the “enable” bu tton on the Bas e st at io n ’s front panel. Th e Base station detects power and termination settings when the par t yline is enabled by pressing the “enable” button on the B ase station’s front panel, or w hen the Base station is powered up after having enabl ed the partyline. The Base station remembers that the par tyline is enabled when it pow er s up. 28 FreeSpeak II User Guide The Ba se station then appears to the wi red partyline system as a remote station. The first call to a Partyl ine channel A or B results in the call alert and subsequent ones do no t give any further alerting unl ess the Partyline channel buttons on the Base s tat io n are toggled. This feature gives the conveni ence of being able to add a f ew wired beltpacks w hen needed to an FS II ins t allation. Connect a standard two - conductor shielded m icrophone cable to the PL CH - A connector, and then connect it to a Clear - Com sing le - channel partyline beltpack.

Enable the partyline and the Base station will enable the required 200 - oh m terminati on, and will supply 24 - VDC to Pin 2 to power the beltpack(s) It is possible to daisy - chai n up to four beltpacks, or use an inte r com XLR s plitter at the Base station to feed microphone cables connected to the individual beltpacks. Because it is a 24 - volt r at her than a 30 - v olt current, the maximum length o f cable that can be connected ( the sum of all of the runs ) will be shorter than what is expected with the standard partyline voltage. The SELECTED PORT screen appea rs. 3) Scroll to and select CALLS. The CALL DESTINATION screen appears. 4) Select the port or group to be connec ted to the partyli ne by scrolling to it and pressing the rotary encoder. Doing so c r eates a route to the selected destination — this port or group can now hear t he activity on the par tyline. Note: This option can also be s et to N ONE. 5) Select TYPE fr om the menu. 6) Select either Clear - Com, D rak e, or RT S. 7) T he Base stat ion automatically set s the termination, audio levels, and call s ignaling options f or the selected partyline system. Note: Th e Base station does not detect the RTS call s i gnal. 29 FreeSpeak II User Guide Connect using a standard XLR cabl e. Ensure that the party l ine type is set to “RTS” using the menu on the Ba se s t ati on before enabling the partyli ne. See the chapter “Programming a Syst em from the Ba se s t ati on ” for more information. Warning: Previous versions of this manual described a cable which would allow access to channel 1 of a dua l channel RTS beltpack. The LED wil l light, and the connection is made. To disconnect the partyline connections, pr ess these switches again. T he switch may be “locked” in the SYSTEM menu so that the partylines may not be disconnected. Because partyline intercom does not hav e global level control on a chann el, input and o utput level controls are provided via the f ront panel programming.

Scroll to POR TS on the main display screen and press the rotary encode r to select. Scroll to PLCHA or PLCHB and press to select. Select LEVELS, then selec t the input or output lev el. Use the rotary encoder t o adjust the nu merical level — clock wise to increase the lev el and counter - clockwise to decrease the level. Make the estimated changes in lev el and pres s the rotary encoder t o save the changes. Test the levels between the partyline and FS I I beltpack, and make additional changes as n eeded. W hen both are adj usted, select BACK on each s cr een until the main screen is displayed. Users connected to the B ase station c an be forced to listen to the a c tivity on the partyline by initiat ing a “c all”. For more inform ation on programming the Base station, see the chapter “ Pr ogramming a System from the Base station ”. 4.2.5 Troubles hooting p arty line c onnections 4.2.5.1 Re ducing FS II b el tp ack echo when talking to a analogue partyline If the Base station and beltpack are not set up co r rectly the FS II user w ill experience an echo when talking to a partyl ine (either directly or via a group or a w ireless par tyline). The echo is caused by either local audio coupl ing in the headset due to the microphone gain being set too high or audio reflections from the partyline that ca n m inimized by setting a VO X gate on the partyline and the partyline being auto nulled. An FS II system has a bui lt - in microphone gain control, but a VOX gate lev el can also be set in the configuration editor (see next section). 30 FreeSpeak II User Guide The W PL s reduce the variation in audio l evels heard when talking to analogue party lines. The WPLs are created in the con f iguration editor in a similar way to a user cre at ing a group. 4.2.5.

3 How to set the VOX gating level on the p artyline connec ted to the Base stati on Figure 4-2 VOX Gating Level on p ar tyline c onnection The VOX gate allow s t he user to set limits to the a udio that will be passed from the partyline to the Ba se s t ati on mixer; by setting the VOX lev el at the correct level the user can cut the audio reflections (which cause the echo) from the par t yline when a w ir eless beltpack user speaks. This is achieved w hen the VOX level is set above the audio l evel of the reflections, thus allowing a partyline user’s voice to pass through the VOX gate in the Base s t ati on mixer but the VOX gate wil l reject the audio reflections. Note: If both the partyline user and the FS II user spea k at the same time, the F S I I user may hear the echo as the audio ref lect ions piggy back the partyline audi o. 31 FreeSpeak II User Guide The auto nulling is then act ivated by pressing and holding the enable part yline button. The Base station will go then into an auto null routine. 4.3 Wireless p arty line The FS II Base station provides five wireless partyline groups which allow up to twenty eight members to be connected together in a conf erence call. T he beltpack keys assigned to t he wireless partyline group are assigned as dual t alk and listen and pa r tylines connected to the group are assigned as tal k and listen. W hen a beltpack or partyline talks to a wireless partyline group the talk signal from the beltpack or partyline is subtracted fr om the listen signal to r emove the sidetone result ing from the user’s voice being looped back in the conference audio, leaving only the audio from other membe rs. Therefore in order to allow bel tpacks to talk to each other and a w ired par tyline a wireless partyline must be set up that includes the wired par tyline (PLCHA or PLCHB) and t he beltpacks (see Figure 4-5 Connecting beltpacks to a w ir ed partyline). This ensures that the audio on t he beltpacks is the talk audio and not the sid et one audio. The descriptions below wil l discuss connections with Clear - Com Matrix Plus digit al matrix, Clear - Com Eclipse digital matrix, other brands of digital matrix intercoms, other 4 - wire audio devices, and t he front - panel settings associated with these 4 - wire co nnections. 4.4.1.1 To c onnect the Base statio n to a matrix port: 1) Scroll to PORTS on the main display screen and press the rotary encoder to select.
